Owl Lodge | A cosy hot tub hideaway for couples set by the beautiful Chesterfield Canal

For a taste of country living with no luxury spared, we recommend this boutique retreat, tucked in woodlands right on the border of Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Owl Lodge makes the most of its super quiet country location, complete with morning birdsong and sunsets over the hills, complimented with modern luxuries including your own private hot tub and indoor wood-burning stove. There is an easy train link from London to nearby Retford station, or you can drive in around an hour from Leeds, Hull or Sheffield, making this retreat a stress-free way to get back to nature.

Hop onto Owl Lodge’s large raised decking area and you’ll find your own covered hot tub – emptied between guests and refilled, hot and ready for you to start your holiday and enjoy lazy afternoons in the bubbles.

Inside there is a comfortable and stylish interior, with everything you’ll need for a relaxing time away. There’s a carved mahogany king size bed with an extra deep mattress and luxury bedding, in front of the cabin’s wood-burning stove, all put together for a cosy nights. Across from here you’ll find a red leather Chesterfield sofa too. There’s complimentary wifi throughout the lodge, along with a Smart TV, and central heating, so you can stay well connected and extra toasty during your stay.

Across from here, Owl Lodge has a large, luxury walk in shower, with complimentary quality eco toiletries, fluffy towels and bathrobes.

The retreat’s owners will leave you with a speciality breakfast hamper – complete with local produce like free range eggs, bacon and sausages, teas, coffees and more. You can cook this up in the lodge’s own kitchen space, where you’ll also find cooking utensils, a microwave, cooker, fridge ice box and a dishwasher.

Outside, you can enjoy your own garden space with a large wooden day bed, ideal for relaxing on sunny days. You might spot a kingfisher darting across the nearby pond if you keep your eyes peeled. There’s also a fire bowl barbecue set here, made for alfresco lunches. If you’re looking for an extra way to surprise your partner, you can also reserve the use of an onsite wood-burning sauna or the site’s indoor barbecue cabin, which is free for guests.​ And now there is also an aromatherapy steam room exclusively for the use of Hawthorn Hideaway guests. There’s also a rowing boat for hire; perfect for a romantic picnic or even a proposal on the water.

Owl Lodge is one of only two lodges on the Hawthorn Hideaway grounds, so your stay will be very peaceful. The two-acre site is only a stone’s throw from Chesterfield Canal. The minimum stay is 2 nights, you can check in on Mondays, Wednesday or Fridays, except bank holidays and valentines when there is a 3 night minimum stay.

There are many walks and cycle rides to enjoy during your stay, including the canal towpath itself which leads all the way into Chesterfield (it’s a 46-mile path, all in all, so bring sandwiches!). The market towns of Bawtry, Retford and Gainsborough are all within a 15-minute drive, with their boutique shops and restaurants. Then, there’s the epic Yorkshire Wildlife Park, and the 500-year-old Gainsborough Old Hall to explore. There’s even a local helicopter flying experience – or, if you’d rather keep your feet on the ground, we recommend a look around the beautiful historic city of Lincoln.
