Whitsand Bay is one of those stretches of English coastline that feels ancient and unchanged – rugged and naturally romantic through and through. And tucked in the side of the coastline here is the laid back Whirlwind retreat, where you can enjoy views of the sea and a real feeling of escape.
This retreat is almost hidden, and set well back from the road and away from traffic. Step inside and you will find an open plan living area with views down the coastline and out to sea. The style here is stylish but pared-down and comfy – so if you’re looking for somewhere you can really relax this might be the place. The living area has a sofa, a wall-hung television and ‘living flame’ stove, and full-width glass doors which allow coastal light in while allowing you to watch the ever-changing sea-skies outside. The retreat has central heating and there’s wifi – so even though you’re miles from city hassle, you’ll still be toasty and well connected.
Across from this relaxing space, you’ll find a double bedroom with views across open countryside, with its rolling hills and valleys. There’s an en-suite shower room with shower enclosure, and external door to garden. Also in the apartment, there’s a dining area with a table and two chairs, alongside a kitchen area with everything you might need to whip up a romantic meal.
We like the outside of Whirlwind, with its modern terrace, decked out with chimenea and outdoor chairs and sofa. It would make a great place to watch the stars at night. There’s also a barbecue for sunny lunches with sea views.
You can bring your car here, with parking for two vehicles. You can also bring your dog for an additional fee – so long as your pooch is well-behaved.
Once you’ve parked up and are ready to explore, you are on Whitsand Bay, with its wide, dramatic arc of coast, and its long sandy beach dotted with craggy rocks and backed by high cliffs. Rock pools dotted along the beach reveal a whole array of marine life, and out to sea the bay is a popular dive site, home to HMS Scylla, an ex-naval frigate sunk in 2004 to form an artificial reef. A 250m wander down the cliff path from Whirlwind will start you on coastal routes galore. This is quite a steep and narrow path, so it will get you fit although it’s not great for those with reduced mobility. Once you head down to the sands you’ve got a whole three mile dog-friendly stretch to enjoy – so if that well-behaved pooch is with you he’s bound to have a good time.
For a relaxed walking destination, you can head over to Cliff Top Cafe about 20 minutes stroll away. Within a short drive is Cawsand Bay, with cafe, shops and surf hire. Or, if you want a city, head to Plymouth, with all its theatres, cinemas, cafes, restaurants and shops.
