Twee Gebroeders | A very romantic Dutch barge moored in a very special place

Now this is what we call super romantic! How about a gorgeous restored Dutch barge moored at one of Suffolk’s loveliest small towns for your next romantic break? Complete with beautiful bespoke joinery and an open cockpit to relax, this barge has everything for a very special romantic getaway.

Twee Gebroeders (or ‘Two Brothers’ for most of us) is a 64ft fully restored Dutch Sailing Barge. It’s moored on the iconic waterfront at The Tidemill in Woodbridge, Suffolk. There has been a mill on this quay for over 800 years. Today there are only 5 tide mills left in the country and this one is pretty iconic with its high clapperboard exterior. It sets the scene for what is a very special retreat in a very special place.

The barge has recently been lovingly restored and you’ll see the attention to detail everywhere; from the bespoke cabinetry to the Delft style inspired tiles in the bathroom and the fabulous cast iron range cooker. Inside you’ll find two cabins; one has two full size adult bunks and the other a full size double bed. There are little nautical details everywhere leaving you in no doubt that you are on a historic vessel.

We love the open cockpit with plenty of seating so you can just sit and take in the sights and sounds of the estuary, watch all the boats go by and simply soak up the sun. Up to three dogs are welcome on board making this a luxury break for all of the family.

Step off the gangplank and you’ll find yourself in the hustle and bustle of the quayside and waterfront with the impressive new Whisstocks development where there are shops, cafes and restaurants on your doorstep. Woodbridge itself has a lot of other quaint places to visit, from small independent shops to cafes and even a tiny cinema.

The Deben Estuary is tidal and is a Special Protection Area within one of the two local AONB’s (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty). You can enjoy leisurely walks up and down the river from the barge. Here you can spot a wide range of wading birds and even the occasional seal.

This place really does have a different pace of life and being on the water is so relaxing you can’t help but chill out and enjoy this very special retreat in a very special place.
