This unique arch was originally crafted to impress passers-by. More than 200 years after the famous architect William Kent made this stand-out design it’s still got all its charms, and some more have been added now with a redesigned interior to match its eye-catching silhouette. A perfect pet-friendly boutique honeymoon cottage in Norfolk.
The Triumphal Arch sits proudly on the 25,000-acre Holkham Estate and offers romantic couples the chance to experience boutique luxury within the peaceful setting of rolling parkland, with panoramic views on each side.
Step inside this retreat and you’ll find three levels full of charm. On entering, you’ll discover a modern open plan kitchen and dining area, with stone floors, a huge high ceiling, and everything you might need to create dinner for two, along with a dining table with room for four and the grand shell of an original fireplace. There’s also a handy little cloakroom with a washbasin and toilet. Look out for a welcome hamper filled with local goodies to get your holiday off to a good start.
Head up the spiral staircase and there’s a middle level with a shower room, featuring a modern shower cubicle.
And on the top floor you’ll find the really standout features of The Triumphal Arch’s interior. Up here, there’s an open plan living area with an open fire, for comfy nights in. There’s laid back seating, and a freeview TV. Just across from this, there’s a bedroom area with a king size bed and a cast iron roll-top bath with wash basin. It feels like its own Rapunzel’s tower here, with everything set out to create a place to relax. Look out the windows and you can admire views across the park.
Outside, you will find your own lawned garden area, and alongside this there is a driveway for your car.
Owners of The Triumphal Arch allow up to two well-behaved dogs, you just have to keep these on a lead while enjoying the surrounding parkland.
While you’re here, there is a lot to explore around North Norfolk. You can start in the grounds of the Holkham Estate, home to Holkham Hall, which was used in the shooting of 2008 film The Duchess, starring Kiera Knightley and Ralph Fiennes.
The retreat owners will treat you to a pass that entitles you to free parking at Holkham and Wells beaches and Freeman Street Car Park in Wells, along with discounts at several local shops and cafes, so you can enjoy finding your way around. And once you’ve got your bearings, there’s plenty to do outside the estate.
Hop down Lady Anne’s Drive to the wide-sweeping sands and big skies of a dog friendly beach, bordered by pine woods. Explore coastal town Wells-next-the-Sea as well as surrounding interest spots Burnham Market and its sister villages, Brancaster, Cley-next-the-Sea and the town of Holt. There’s great seafood round here too – try out Wells Crab House or the high class dining spot The Victoria Inn, which sources much of its produce from the Holkham Estate.
