The Retreat | A very stylish holiday escape on the Yorkshire coast

The Retreat has got to be one of our most glamorous escapes. This luxury cottage, on the coast of Yorkshire, near Sandsend, was once the home to an American Vogue editor – and a little look at the pictures will show you why. With stunning gardens and beautiful interiors, the cottage looks like something straight out of the pages of a beauty magazine.

The Retreat in Newholm combines the best of both worlds; lots of historic charm and features as well as luxurious interiors and modern fixtures and fittings.

The Retreat makes a perfect romantic bolthole for two. Downstairs there is a lovely kitchen and dining area as well as a formal dining room with double aspect views of the gardens. The generous sitting room features a wood burning stove and further views of the award-winning gardens. There is also a double bedroom on ground level and bathroom with shower.

The upstairs master bedroom, which is a bit of a stunner, comes complete with its own en suite. You can enjoy fabulous views from here, out across the gardens and coastline beyond. With the sun streaming through in the morning and the only sound of birdsong to wake you, this is a great place to start your holiday in comfort. The en-suite comes with fabulous sea views and a roll-top bath making for a perfectly sumptuous soak.

The thoughtful design continues into the large gardens where you will find individual areas, including a rose garden, a patio overlooking the sea and a summerhouse – perfect for reading a novel!

It’s only a short stroll down to the popular seaside village of Sandsend where you’ll find a sandy beach, top restaurants and an amazing Spa. The medieval town of Whitby is also just down the road so if you need a fix of seaside heritage complete with boutique shops, restaurants, bars and cafes you’ll have a whale of a time (sorry, we couldn’t resist!).

For day trips we recommend Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes and Runswick Bay – all a short drive away. Or head inland from the cottage and you can be in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors within minutes. Take a tour of the towns and villages in the area, Egton, Danby, Castleton, Rosedale, or head up on the high moorland of Castleton Rigg.
