This 17th century barn conversion is an ideal retreat for couples hoping to escape for some time away from the city. The Old Workshop his open plan with a kitchen-diner, a double height lounge and a beautiful galleried bedroom with exposed beams. It’s a great choice if you like big light spaces and hate cramped hotel rooms.
There is a fully equipped kitchen, a top notch bathroom and, outside, a lovely garden area to enjoy a glass of wine. There is a small courtyard with a patio and furniture, so you can enjoy the good weather, as well as parking for two cars.
Once you are out the door you can walk the numerous footpaths, sample the local gastro-pub or admire the views from the nearby medieval castle site. All of this is within a 30 minute drive from the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline, with its spectacular beaches and towns such as Lyme Regis and Bridport.
Hinton St George, a picturesque village situated a mile to the north, offers a village shop and an award winning gastro pub ‘The Lord Poullett Arms’. The nearest market town is Crewkerne, situated two miles to the east. This offers a range of shops, cafes an indoor pool and gym complex.
Lyme Regis, famous as the setting for the French Lieutenant’s Women, is a 30 minute drive away and offers a range of independent boutiques, second hand bookshops, cafes, fossil shops, museums and a cinema.
West Bay and Bridport, known as the gateway to the Jurassic Coast, is half an hour away. It was Bridport where Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall of River Cottage tried out his first produce, and his products are still sold at the monthly farmer’s market.
Art fans can check out the 16th century Montacute House, which is a 20 minute drive away. It has the longest Long Gallery in England and houses more than 60 of best Tudor and Elizabethan portraits from the National Portrait Gallery collection. Then there is Forde Abbey, a stately home only 10 minutes away with more than 900 years of history and romance are encapsulated in this elegant former Cistercian monastery and its 30 acres of award-winning gardens.
If the pair of you are feeling energetic, the South West Coast Path National Trail offers 630 miles of superb coastal walking. From Minehead on the edge of the Exmoor National Park to the shores of Poole Harbour, in Dorset, it is the best way to enjoy the coastal scenery, wildlife and heritage.
Food-lovers are in for a treat. Lord Poulett Arms in Hinton St George is a leisurely walk away through the country lanes. It won national dinning pub of the year in 2009. Another one to try is the River Cottage Canteen in Axminster, a 30 minute drive away. Try out their own produce in the restaurant and if you love the food, you can buy the ingredients in their shop to take home.
