This is a breath-taking retreat where you can wake up with the birds singing right outside your window. The Hideaway is a luxury treehouse, perched up in the tree tops in the tranquil East Woods, with views over to the coast and Devon’s Hartland Point.
There are beautiful sights to explore right from your door step, with the Devon coast and Putsborough Beach around the corner, and a myriad of walks stretching across North Devon’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so this makes a great retreat for a couple looking for a break to recharge their batteries and head out on some long rambles across the south English countryside.
Before all that, there’s time to kick back and relax in your very own tree top sanctuary. The Hideaway has been handcrafted from larch and pine, and there’s a natural feel that runs throughout the retreat. Head up the wooden staircase and in to an open plan living area, with big windows to let in the view. There’s a wood burner, for cosy nights inside, and a proper kitchen area for cooking. There’s also a spacious en-suite shower room and toilet.
The Hideaway creators have gone the extra mile when creating its interior, and so their treehouse has been given stylist little twists we really like. There are natural materials in abundance, furniture in geometrical shapes, and even a nod to the honey-making Pickwell bees that have their home in one of the gardens nearby.
One of the loveliest features at The Hideaway is its large seated balcony, with views down to the sea. You can sit out under the North Devon sky and listen to the ocean waves and enjoy the starry skies.
There’s all the modern conveniences – like wifi – in The Hideaway. On the Pickwell Manor site, which houses The Hideaway, you will also find a shared garden you can enjoy, as well as a tennis court.
From this woodland location there’s a myriad places to hop to on adventures around the coast. You can explore Lundy Island, the lovely fishing village of Clovelly and nearby Instow. Seek out the galleries of Appledore, head to Dunster Castle and watermill or Ilfracombe Harbour. For those keen on a round of Golf, you are less than 15 minutes from Saunton Golf Club, with two championship links courses that are amongst the West Country’s finest.
There are some eateries to suit every taste. The Hideaway’s owners recommend gastro-pub The Rock Inn, which has a great atmosphere. And they tell us their favourite meal in the area was at The Gendarmerie, in Ilfracombe.
