The Groom's Cottage | A romantic Lake District hidden gem for couples wanting to get away from it all

The Groom ’s Cottage is located in Uldale, a small rural community situated in Wainwright’s Northern Fells area. This means lovely views from the garden across rolling fields, wild birds on your window sill, cows plodding along near the cottage and of course stunning peaks like Skiddaw and Binsey on your doorstep. The Snooty Fox Pub and Mae’s Tearoom & Gallery are both in the village and within walking distance so you’ll not have to go far for a great brew.

Step inside the cottage and you’ll be welcomed by the warm and cosy interiors. The fully equipped handmade oak cottage kitchen is a perfect spot for putting together a lazy breakfast in bed or whipping up a romantic meal for two. It comes complete with a Dolce Gusto coffee maker, the all necessary dishwasher and a washer/dryer. We love the welcome treats and honesty larder stocked with local produce and home baked goodies - yumm! Owner Debs also provides delicious luxury hampers and goodies for special occasions. For example, the red roses & Lake District chocolates are an ideal romantic treat for your loved one - simply pre-order before arrival.

The wood burning stove is the heart of the living and dining room. A great place to relax and unwind, it features a smart TV with DVD player, Bose bluetooth sound system and Wifi. The unique locally made furnishings and luxury fabrics from ‘Art of the Loom’ add to the Lake District look and feel of this property. It’s a lovely room to while away the time or put your feet up after a brisk walk or scenic drive around The Lakes.

The romantic handmade 4-poster double bed with luxurious bedding is the centrepiece of the gorgeous bedroom. And this room is made even more special by the handmade furniture and Lake District photography by Carmen Norman.

Located off the hallway you’ll find the luxury walk-in wet room with monsoon shower and underfloor heating. There’s no doubt in which part of the country you are; the lovely handmade Lakeland slate counter and local Cumbrian toiletries are a reminder that you have woken up in the beautiful Lake District.

Outside you’ll surely enjoy the large walled garden with views over the fields and a pretty outside dining area complete with BBQ. And for the active among us there is also a secure bike store.

This area has so much on offer. Of course there are all the walks, many of which start right from your doorstep. For a bit of shopping we recommend Keswick (great for topping up on all your outdoorsy kit) but we also really enjoyed the historic city of Carlisle. Small enough to find your way around and big enough to have a good selection of shops and restaurants it’s a great place for a rainy day.

For foodies we recommend Rheged Centre near Penrith, The Lakes Distillery near Bassenthwaite Lake and even Tebay services, voted the best motorway services in Britain and for good reason.

Mirehouse and Gardens by Bassenthwaite Lake is another hidden gem. Winner of the Cumbria Tourist Award 2017 Visitor Attraction of the year it’s a great place to explore the historic house, the gardens or the landscape leading down towards the lake.
