This luxury Devon cottage is a great place to relax in the countryside and take in the scenery from your own private hot tub. Situated on a former dairy farm, The Dairy has a cosy home-away-from-home feel, with wooden beams across the ceilings of elegant rooms, a roll top bath and panoramic views from the terrace across the wildflower meadows and rolling countryside. The retreat is at the top of a south facing hill – so you can enjoy 28-mile views to Brixham’s Berry Head on most days and starry skies at night.
We think East Devon’s rolling countryside is a great place to escape to if you’re looking for somewhere with vast quantities of fresh air. This romantic getaway is found in the village of Clyst Hydon, alongside National Trust woodland, perfect for all year round nature walks. Expect Bluebells in spring and a riot of colours from the trees in autumn.
Step inside The Dairy and you’ll find a light and airy living room with comfy sofas, wooden floors and artwork, as well as a wide window view. The space is open plan, and leading off the lounge is a kitchen complete with everything you might need for cooking, including an electric oven, microwave, fridge and freezer. You can reach the bedroom from here, where you’ll find a large king size bed with beamed ceilings and a definite country cottage vibe. There’s a flat screen TV with Freeview too.
A treat in this cottage is its ensuite bathroom, which has a standout roll-top bath as well as a walk-in shower. The other feature we particularly like at The Dairy is its garden terrace, which has been decked out so you can enjoy sunny days and starry skies. You have your own private garden to enjoy, either with a meal from your patio table and chairs, or from the waters of your own hot tub.
This is baby friendly accommodation, so if you’re getting away for an anniversary celebration with a tiny tot in tow then the cottage – with its cot, toys, monitors, electric sterilisers, night lights and high chairs – is pretty much ideal.
Expect to be set up when you arrive. There’s parking available and inside the cottage you’ll find milk in the fridge, coffee and tea on the side, bath towels, hot tub towels, flip flops, and Bluetooth speakers. The supermarket is five miles down the road in Cullompton, and home deliveries can easily be arranged.
Once you’ve settled in there’s a lot to enjoy in the surrounding area. Owners recommend the town of Sidmouth, a short drive away, which is surrounded by East Devon’s area of outstanding natural beauty. It’s a great point to connect to the famous Jurassic Coast and National Trust properties too. Alternatively, you can explore Dartmoor National Park, with its vast granite capped moorlands and native wild ponies.
For anyone looking for more urban amusements, the nearby city of Exeter mixes Roman history and architecture with the buzzing atmosphere for a thriving modern city. It’s a good spot for dining and retail therapy. And when it comes to dining, there are some great choices around The Dairy. The award-winning Five Bells Inn is under a mile away from your cottage. It dates back to the 16th century, with stone floors and exposed wooden beams, and has a large beer garden for the summer and a menu the cottage owners have recommended. And if you’re looking for somewhere to treat yourselves, you could try The Holt, in nearby Honiton, which has earned itself a spot in the Michelin Guide.
