The Count House | A Cornwall cottage escape overlooking the River Tamar

Nestled in natural woodland and with breathtaking views, The Count House is the kind of place to be if you want tranquility and enjoy the great outdoors. Peaceful, secluded and overlooking the River Tamar, this Grade II listed former mine captain’s office is a perfect little hideaway for two on the Cornish/Devon border.

Imagine cosy nights snuggled up in front of the toasty log burning stove, waking up and looking out across the River Tamar from your king size bed, breakfasting on the timber decking, enjoying the scenery and flora and fauna, and perhaps a barbecued supper in the evening.

The cottage features a flatscreen TV and DAB music system with Bluetooth. The village shop is currently closed however there is a Nisa store 2.2 miles from the cottage next to Gunnislake railway station, with larger supermarkets in both Callington and Tavistock which can easily be reached by public transport. NB no washing machine tablets or firelighters are supplied although matches, kindling and locally hand-made soap are provided.

Okel Tor Mine is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, SSSI, part of the World Heritage Site and lies within the heart of the Tamar Valley AONB. It’s an important habitat for wildlife, where badgers, bats and owls live amongst the ruins. Near the river, you might spot a heron or kingfisher - or even glimpse an otter.

Pets are welcome and this retreat can be suitable for people with restricted mobility but please do check with the owners before booking. You will feel like you are miles away from anywhere, yet the village of Calstock is only a short 10 minute walk. This quaint Cornish village has lovely two pub serving excellent food, a quirky café with gluten-free and vegan options, an art gallery, arts centre, ice cream parlour and branch line railway station with regular services to Plymouth. The village features in the recent TV drama “Delicious” starring Dawn French. The National Trust’s beautiful Cotehele House is also within walking distance and the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail actually passes through Okel Tor. Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and the sandy beaches at Whitsand Bay on the south coast are just a short drive away.

While you are here, we recommend you try the food - there are many superb places to eat including the manor house hotel restaurant, the Horn of Plenty.
