The Chapel at Pickwell Manor | A boutique bolthole in Devon near the beach

This tiny former private chapel on the impressive Pickwell Manor estate has been lovingly reformed into a perfect Devon hideaway for two. Hewn out of the local stone and with Gothic arched windows, this romantic cottage is surrounded by glorious gardens with stunning views. And best of all, it’s only a stone’s throw from the beach…

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by a bright kitchen diner, borrowing design elements from 1950’s camper van living. Like the two-ring hob, diner-style seating and Welsh blanket headboard, all there to remind you of how close you are to a surfer’s paradise and to give you that real holiday feeling.

Also downstairs is the generous wet room with double shower. Go up the quirky ladder style stairs (you will get used to them, we promise) and you’re in the gorgeous bedroom decorated in calm and cool colours. Here you will find a comfy chair, flat screen TV and a bed that will make you want to have endless lie-ins.

We love the private terrace that can be accessed from the bedroom - ideal for a romantic glass of your favourite tipple on those long summer evenings. And it’s on this terrace where a special treat awaits you; surrounded by fairy lights there is an outside bath big enough for two so you can enjoy some romantic star gazing or a glass of bubbly with your hubby!

It’s amazing what has been packed into this little space and we feel The Chapel would make a perfect little bolthole for a romantic 2 or 3 night break in Devon.

Outside you have the benefits of staying at Pickwell with its shared terrace, garden, BBQ, tennis court, surf/bike store and games room on site. There is also access to washing machines, tumble dryer and washing lines.

The gardens are some of Pickwell’s most enchanting features. The six acres offer some stunning countryside and sea views and are divided into an Italian garden, a decked area perfect for barbecues and woodlands with meandering paths - all there for you to enjoy.

North Devon is famous for its golden beaches and the Manor makes a perfect base for you to explore them. Putsborough Sands is only a short five minute drive away or if you fancy you can even take a romantic walk down through the fields from your base at The Chapel.

Nearby Georgeham has a village shop handy for your daily needs, historic pubs, and a Post Office.

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to days out. Popular with Victorian and Edwardian seaside lovers, the small towns of Lynton and Lynmouth are worth a visit. Barnstaple is a larger town and offers good shopping with some nice independent shops. For art lovers the towns of Ilfracombe and Appledore offers some good galleries. There are plenty of National Trust properties and of course the wild Exmoor National Park is on your doorstep. So much do do, so little time…
