We would drive to the East coast simply for the fresh sea air and the world’s best fish and chips. Now, we’ve found a great place to stay too. The Byre, in the popular village of Ruswarp, is less than three miles from the coast at Whitby. It’s a light, modern style retreat with an unstuffy feel to it. We think it’s a winner.
There’s a light and airy country feel inside, with wooden floors, given a new twist with white walls and fresh accents on modern furniture. The bedroom has a beautiful king-size bed and great country views, and there’s an ensuite bathroom with a bath and overhead shower.
On the first floor there’s an open plan lounge, kitchen and dining room, with a toasty woodburner and two large swivelling armchairs – careful with these they are addictive. There’s underfloor heating too, making a very cosy retreat. Another feature we love is The Byre’s balcony, with table and chairs – we would love to sit here in the evening.
On sunny days you can step outside onto your own patio with a table and chairs, so you can sup your morning coffee in the sunshine.
The Byre is set in Ruswarp, a picturesque village located just less than two miles away from Whitby and along the river Esk. While you are there, we recommend you make the most of the waterside location and row your way down the River Esk in a rowing boat which are available for hire. This is a good location for walking fans and there are many nice routes including The Monks Trod footpath leading to Whitby or routes to its neighbouring village Sleights.
The fish and chips at Whitby really is worth a trip, as is the coastline. However, food fans can enjoy a whole raft of good restaurants in the area. There’s The Stables nearby, with a mixture of great pub food, and The Bridge Inn, situated in the village. And, when you reach Whitby, there’s a whole array of extra places to choose from. Ditto Restaurant, for starters…
