Swallow Cottage, Robin Hood’s Bay
Robin Hood's Bay
Yorkshire
England
We think this retreat is the ideal getaway for a couple that love the coast and are looking for a cosy hideaway which mixes up luxury and home comforts. Swallow Cottage has been designed and converted from a barn, specifically to treat those who want a fresh air break – with quirky interiors, a toasty woodburner for warm nights in, and moorland walks down to the sea or across the North Yorkshire countryside, starting from the doorstep.
Robin Hood’s Bay is just a three mile stroll away, and is a beautiful fishing village – in fact it’s probably one of the most photographed locations in the world. This little gem is on the eastern end of Alfred Wainwright’s famous 190 mile Coast to Coast walk, so keep a look out for some well worn hikers.
Swallows Cottage is a great place to land. The first thing you’ll notice when you step inside this romantic retreat is its bright and welcoming feel. The downstairs is open-plan, and the owners have included a lot of character in the design – so there’s classic country elements like reclaimed pine flooring mixed with cool retro touches like the 50s-style orange sofa. It’s a fun space and would be a great scene to see at the end of a day walking across the beautiful rolling Yorkshire countryside.
You’ll find a vintage wood-burner for the evenings, with logs, kindling and coal provided, along with Freeview TV with DVD Player, wireless speakers and complimentary wifi, books and board games.
Just next to this is the kitchen, which also mixes colours and textures for a unique feel. Here you’ll find all the cooking appliances you’ll want for self catering – even a bright orange microwave. Keep an eye out for the welcome hamper, because we’ve seen it and it looks good.
The dining area is a lovely place to wind up, with a retro-style table and colourful chairs. Head up the stairs and you’ll find the bedroom, with a cast iron double bed. This room has a nice tucked away feel, giving the cottage a real retreat vibe. And under the stairs you’ll find a standout bathroom with brilliant blue walls and a standing bath.
Wake up at this cottage and you can enjoy your breakfast just outside in the little south-facing courtyard, complete with a bistro table and chairs. From this spot you can enjoy stunning views of the moors as they roll on down towards the sea.
There’s lots of space for off-road parking. Up to two dogs are welcome for a small extra charge.
As a holiday break location, the Yorkshire coast offers a good mix of things to do. Swallows Cottage is right inside the North York Moors National Park – and for lovers of the outdoors, there’s a varied landscape of windswept dales, heather-clad moors and dramatic coastlines. In between these you’ll find picturesque towns and villages, vibrant cities and a rich historical heritage.
If you’re looking for a day trip, head to Whitby, for some Gothic architecture and the perfect fish and chips on the beach, or Scarborough for the English seaside town experience. Then there’s gorgeous York, further inland. It’s all around you, if you can pull yourself away from the sea and the hills.
