When city living gets too much we know where we would love to escape. The Hayloft is a romantic wood-beamed home-away-from-home and is only 90 minutes from London. Leave the office at closing time and you could make it in time for dinner. This rural hideaway is set within the stunning countryside made famous by Constable and Gainsborough, and is part of a historic private estate that has been in the same family since 1611.

The Hayloft is part of a stable block dating from the 18th century. It still has the romantic beams and rustic feel, and added to this are all the modern luxuries you could want, to help treat your partner to a peaceful week away.

Head up the stairs, above the old stable workshop, to find a relaxing and airy retreat which is an ideal size for two. There is a lounge with two comfy sofas, a large coffee table and TV. The kitchen has every modern convenience and there is a dining area with a large pine table and chairs.

An arched double door leads to the spacious bedroom, with a timbered ceiling. Nestled in here is a luxurious, super king size bed with fluffy duvets and soft pillows. There is also a large sofa in the bedroom, for a good book before a peaceful night’s sleep. Across the landing is a modern bathroom, with a bath, handheld shower and, next door, a separate toilet.

Outside, there is a lawned area for sitting out to enjoy your breakfast or to catch a few rays over lunch or dinner. For the sporty, there is a tennis court, as well as a large pond and a walled garden, where a couple of peacocks roam and show off their splendid plumes. Tennis racquets and balls are provided for you to enjoy a game.

There are plenty of footpaths round and about the estate and beyond, with woodlands, Belchamp Brook and a lovely mill pond nearby. There’s also a pretty, 14th century brick and flint church, with some fascinating mediaeval wall paintings, just across the road.

The country lanes are quiet and ideal for a cycling trip and the cottage is just a few miles from Sudbury, Long Melford, Lavenham, Finchingfield and Castle Hedingham.
