Rothay Garden | A Very Romantic Lake District Hotel and Spa

The English Lake District is one of England’s most beautiful and romantic locations – with sublime fells and plunging valleys. Within this landscape is the village of Grasmere, home of the Romantic poets and a truly tranquil haven. You can enjoy your own spot between the daffodils at the luxurious hotel Rothay Garden.

This striking four star retreat is nestled in two acres of picturesque riverside gardens, surrounded by the majestic hillside which once inspired the poet William Wordsworth.

You can choose from a selection of some of the finest bedrooms and suites in the Lake District, with each room recently refurbished and given a modern, sophisticated look. The bedrooms offer ensuite facilities and a host of little luxuries. Many are on the ground floor, one is fully DDA accessible, and half the rooms have superb six-foot wide king size beds while the rest have sumptuous five-foot Queen Size beds.

Our favourite room is the rather grand Butter Crag Premier Loft Suite. It’s the most spacious of all suites, tastefully designed and beautifully appointed. It also feels very secluded as there is no access to any other rooms nearby so it’s almost like having your own romantic apartment within Rothay Garden Hotel. And to top it all there is a stunning balcony with amazing views over the surrounding fells. When you stay in Butter Crag you’ll also enjoy a King Size bed, lovely spacious separate seating area, ethical toiletries, hairdryer, multi-channel freeview flat-screen tv, free internet access, complimentary welcome tray including a variety of hot drinks and mineral water, and fluffy bathrobes and slippers.

After you have settled in, you can treat your tastebuds in the Garden Restaurant, which has been awarded 2 rosettes for its fine food. This show-stopping dining venue is a great place to impress, with contemporary furniture, clean elegant lines and great views overlooking the hotel’s two acres of gardens. The kitchens are managed by head chef Andrew Burton, who has been at the hotel for 21 years and is one of only 300 Masterchefs of Great Britain. The hotel’s hearty Lakeland breakfasts, superb gourmet dinners and fine collection of wines are great attractions, which have brought guests back to the hotel time and time again.

Another smile-raising feature of Rothay Garden is its new Riverside Spa. You can relax in style in this haven for aching muscles and stressed minds, and admire superb views of the fells through its floor-to-ceiling windows. In the summer months, the glass-fronted doors open to let breeze in and give you a truly natural relaxation experience.

The hotel has been a true life project and a labour of love for owner Chris Carss, and his dedication shows. From its beautiful balconies, to the monsoon showers in the spa, to the luxurious coffees served downstairs, the hotel provides a decadent feel. Rothay Garden has won numerous hotel industry and tourism awards, including regional and national recognition for staff development, business management, caring for the environment and even ‘Best UK Hotel Brochure’.

When you stay in Grasmere, you are on the doorstep of numerous great places to visit. The village itself is home to St Oswold’s Church, where William and Dorothy Wordsworth are buried. Just up the hill is Allan Bank, one of Wordsworth’s previous homes and a building which has a roaring fire and spectacular views across Lakeland. For the food-lovers, there is also the famous Grasmere Gingerbread to try in the village too. The neighbouring villages of Ambleside and Windermere both have their own individual charm, while the fells are right on your doorstep, along with a thousand romantic walks for two.
