This retreat is a perfect choice for couples who want to feel like they’ve escaped away from it all. The Shepherd’s Hut at Upper Gelli, by Welshpool, is a cosy retreat created just for two, hidden on a former dairy farm. The retreat is nestled on a picture perfect hillside – you’ll spot its cornflower blue wooden exterior with sweet hanging baskets as you arrive at Upper Gelli.
This romantic traditional shepherd’s hut was commissioned by Gary and Ros from award winning local artisan craftspeople, Martin and Charlotte of Black Mountain Shepherds Huts. And, once inside your romantic retreat in the Welsh Borders, you’ll find they’ve designed the space to offer cute and quirky home comforts in a little romantic bolthole.
You get to experience not just one shepherd’s hut; there’s also a second hut with kitchen and dining space and you even get to use the separate hobbit- house like fab BBQ hut too. Take time to relax and you will spot red kites soaring in the skies and the hardy flocks of sheep roaming on the hills – so if you’re after fresh air and country views, this is ideal.
The larger hut offers a sitting area that has its own wood burning stove, where you can curl up after a day exploring the hills. Gary and Ros will provide you with complimentary wooden logs, to get your fire started. The bedroom area has been designed to offer a perfectly relaxed night’s rest. From here, you can admire the view of the beautiful Welsh countryside. You’ll also find an adjoining en-suite shower room, well-stocked with complimentary Welsh soaps and toiletries.
The second hut houses a small and sweet kitchen and dining space. There’s all you’ll need here for self catering cooking, and you can either eat inside at the oak dining table or step out outside to enjoy al fresco dining and experience the beautiful Welsh landscape. And on top of this you also have complimentary use of the fabulous barbeque hut; a great way to enjoy indoor/outdoor cooking and living regardless of the weather.
Whilst relaxing in the rocking chair or gathering around the fire pit you will see the working farms, with their sheep and cattle grazing on the hillside. From ploughing of the fields, new born lambs jumping in the meadow, to hay making and pheasants scarpering across the lanes, guests can experience a glimpse into the life of Welsh farmers.
Foodie options are here aplenty in the surrounding area. From local farm shops and award winning butchers to restaurants ranging from country village pubs like the stunning Lion Hotel in Berriew, or the welcoming Corn Store or the quirky Bay Tree Vintage Tea room & Cocktail Bar in Welshpool
There are several short walks around Upper Gelli, complete with seating, where you can take advantage of the views. And if hiking is you’re thing, you’re not far from all that Snowdonia or the beautiful Welsh coast have to offer. There’s also the historic Powis Castle to explore, in the heart of Welshpool, and the owner’s recommend a trip to enjoy the romantic Gregynog Hall and the gardens of Glansevern Hall.
