Constance at Pickwell Manor | A romantic Devon getaway with roof terrace near the beach

We think Constance would be an ideal retreat choice for a couple who want a romantic break and have a couple of kids along with them too. You’re set in a rather grand location, within the tenth century Pickwell Manor, in peaceful grounds including an Italian Garden and rose arches, and also with the benefits of six acres of space to play, with beaches and rock pools just a 20 minute stroll away.

This luxury apartment is set on the Manor’s second floor, entered via a west-wing entrance hall. It feels a world away from anywhere, although the grounds themselves are an excellent point from which to explore Devon – with its rock pools, country walks, Tarka Trail for cycling, and days out.

Head inside, and here you’ll find a hallway which stretches out to become a generous lounge. Once the manor’s unused loft space, owners have transformed this into a spacious apartment, with a tranquil feel.

Comstance’s comfy apartment lounge includes two sofas, for relaxing after a day exploring the area, a flat screen TV, and complimentary wifi. We like the calming decor here, and the original paintings on the walls.

From the living room, wander through, and you’ll find a relaxing bedroom, with double bed. If you’re bringing kids, they will enjoy their own partitioned bunk room within the lounge – making a holiday feel like an adventure for them. You can also add an additional Z bed for younger children which can be made available for a small charge.

Our favourite feature of this retreat is its own private roof terrace – meaning you can sit back and listen to the rolling sea and make the most of the country views. Step out onto here via double doors and enjoy breakfast – or maybe dinner al fresco – on fabulous decking.

Back inside, there’s a bathroom with a shower over the bath, and a kitchen with everything you might need for a self catering break.

Once you step out of Constance, guests can enjoy a shared terrace by Pickwell Manor, along with gardens for strolling. The sun terrace leads down to an Italian Garden, surrounded by mature shrubs, flowers, and rose arches. Pickwell Manor grounds offer glorious views over the surrounding Devon countryside and along to the nearby coast, less than half a mile away.

There’s a barbecue for your use in the summertime. There’s even a tennis court on site, as well as a games room.

There’s plenty to do while you’re here. We would make a beeline for the beaches for starters – and there’s several to choose from. Sands at Putsborough, Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton are all very popular with surfers. You can explore the rock pools at low tide, and there are good spots for beach games on a hot day. Avid walkers can pick from an array of country and cliff top walks, with Exmoor to the east and National Trust coastlines and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty all around. There are opportunities for golf, kite surfing and cycling (try the Tarke Trail) as well as horse riding nearby and paddle boarding.

If you fancy a day trip there are also lots of interesting places choose from. Manor owners recommend Lundy Island, Lynton and Lynmouth, for starters. And Clovelly, Instow and Appledore (which are pretty Devon seaside villages) and Barnstaple for good shopping. Take your pick!
