Palmers Lodge | A boutique honeymoon gatehouse for two and set on the grand Holkham Estate by the North Norfolk Coast

This historic retreat is set in a real romantic hotspot – it’s Grade II listed and full of charm and has been restored to impress couples who are searching for a retreat with a taste of luxury. We think Palmers Lodge is a perfect size and its location is pretty impressive, on the grounds of the 25,000-acre Holkham Estate, which played host to Hollywood film stars Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes for their filming of The Duchess. You are less than a two mile stroll from a pub and less than two miles from the sea here, and if you’ve got a dog or two then they are welcome – with all the walking opportunities around it seems likely they’ll love it too. Step inside Palmers Lodge and you’ll find a comfortable open plan living room with cosy leather sofas, wooden floors and a gorgeous fireplace with a working wood burner for nights in. The owners have left you a starter pack of wood, so, along with the central heating, you’re going to be toasty in you hideaway nestled by woodland.

There’s a great tree-filled view outside. Most of all, we love the rafters in here – they really give a feeling of space and olde world charisma. There’s a wide flat screen TV, a DVD player and you’ll also find a dining table – with room for four if you’d like to invite a couple of friends over.

There’s a kitchen area, which has been crafted to offer all the essentials you might want for a brew and breakfast. Expect to find a welcome hamper filled with local goodies to get your holiday off to a good start. There’s also going to be a pass left out for you – so you can enjoy free parking at Holkham and Wells beaches and Freeman Street Car Park in Wells.

Head down stairs from here, and you will find a truly unique space, lovingly converted from the gatehouse’s vaulted cellars. The Palmers Lodge owners have designed this with its own glass atrium – so now at night you can see the stars above Norfolk. In this little hideaway, you’ll find a TV room, perfect for winding down after a day exploring the area, as well a spacious bedroom with a super king-size bed.

Palmers Lodge has a modern bathroom, with a bath and toilet, and a separate shower room for added luxury with a walk-in shower and two washbasins. All the comfy towels will be waiting for you.

Outside, you have your own lawned garden area to enjoy on long sunny days, along with private parking for your car. Two well-behaved dogs are welcome. You just have to keep them on a lead while in the parkland.

Once you are here there’s a lot to explore. The Holkham Estate is in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The grounds are ideal for cycling, with bike hire close by, and there are walks and trails galore too. For starters, head out of the estate and you’ll find Lady Anne’s Drive, leading you to wide-sweeping sands and the big skies of the dog friendly beach.

A little wander further down the coast and you’ll find the town of Wells-next-the-Sea, with its iconic beach huts and picturesque harbour, as well as Burnham Market and sister villages, Brancaster, Cley-next-the-Sea and the town of Holt.
