No. 1 Rose Cottage, Rusland Valley
Bouth
The Lake District
LA12 8JE
England
This romantic hideaway is perfect if you want your own spot of luxury in some of the ‘most English’ countryside in England. No 1 Rose Cottage is found among the rolling hills of South Lakeland, just four miles from the renowned Lake Windermere. This is famous writer territory – with no less than children’s writer Beatrix Potter and poet William Wordsworth inspired by the area – and when you arrive you will understand why.
The Lake District is a location that suits two types of couples in particular. Firstly it is perfect for those who want to head out on the hills and feel the wind in their hair – with thousands of walking routes available round the fells, each with their own often-stunning view at the top – as well as those who want to have a go at the wide variety of outdoor adventures like watersports, canyoning or ghyll scrambling. And, it also suits a second type of couple – the ones who want to use their holiday for serious relaxation. Find this in the peaceful lake edges, the sophisticated restaurants, and inside No. 1 Rose Cottage itself, which has that cosy feel that will make you mentally put your feet up before you’ve even taken your shoes off.
This romantic cottage is situated in the pretty Lakeland village of Bouth, just a few miles from Windermere and tucked away from the tourists. You’ll spot the cottage’s white walls from down the road – with a pretty front lawn leading to two stone steps and the front door. There’s parking for your car here.
Inside, you’ll find a cosy open plan lounge and dining room, which is the perfect size for two. We like the relaxed country feel to this space, with two chairs facing a toasty woodburning stove for quiet nights in, under traditional oak beams. There is a TV with Sky channels and a DVD player, along with complimentary wifi. Behind the sofa, you’ll find a sweet dining table and chairs laid out for two.
Rose Cottage’s kitchen is ‘bijou’ and yet the owners have managed to include everything you might need for cooking while you’re away. There’s an oven, hob, microwave, fried-freezer and dishwasher, as well as a coffee machine. You can even find a washing machine and tumble dryer in the nearby utility room.
Wander through from here and you’ll find a modern bathroom with shower over a spa bath, and toilet. And head up the stairs to find the bedroom. This romantic space includes a king-size bed and comfy armchair, as well as views over the picturesque countryside surrounding the cottage. Alongside here, you’ll find a dressing room, perfect for holding any extra luggage, and for getting ready to head out and see what the Lakes has to offer.
When the sun shines, hop into the garden and sit back in the patio seating area, with its country views. You could even light up the barbecue. And once you’re ready to head out further, there are things to delight you a stone’s throw from your doorstep.
The laid back village of Bouth includes the popular White Hart pub, just a short walk from the cottage, which serves excellent home cooked fare and local ales. Nearby, you will find the Old Hall Farm, which has a farm shop serving its own dairy ice cream.
From your romantic retreat you’re only a short drive away from some of the Lake District’s most loved beauty spots, including the villages of Coniston, Hawkshead and Grasmere, along with hundreds of lesser-known valleys and secret tarns.
If you’re after a special food experience while you’re here, we recommend you head to the medieval village of Cartmel, which has become something of a culinary hotspot. Try the village’s famous Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding, its own beer, the village’s own chocolate and, if you want a treat, book yourself in to experience the internationally acclaimed Michelin Star restaurant, L’Enclume.
