Navigation Cottage | A canalside dog friendly Maldon luxury cottage perfect for romantic breaks in Essex

A unique setting means you’ll never get bored at this romantic holiday cottage in Essex; there’s a host of boats passing the canal at the front, there are stunning views across the nature reserve at the back and the historic town of Maldon is just around the corner. It’s dog friendly too so you can share this break with your four legged friend.

Navigation cottage was built in the last 1700’s by the men who worked on the construction of this canal. It still has all the character you would expect from such a historic holiday cottage but the property has recently been completely refurbished to accommodate modern day living.

Step inside into the hallway and you’ll find the cosy sitting room to your right. With its timbered walls, beamed ceiling and brick fireplace with wood burning stove it oozes character and makes for a lovely place to relax in the evenings.

The new kitchen perfectly mixes new and old with beautiful wooden cabinets and stainless steel unites and appliances as well as a large oven and cooker, making this a real cook’s kitchen. Off the kitchen there is a lovely dining room, furnished with stylish antiques and a handy utility room too.

The pretty conservatory looks out over the large private garden and nature reserve to the rear. It’s a lovely place to sit with a drink and enjoy a romantic sunset even on colder nights. We love the wooden deck in the garden which resembles a boardwalk and extends down to the large wildlife pond. Perfect for reading, sun bathing or just taking in the far reaching views.

Upstairs are two double romantic bedrooms, both furnished and finished to a very high standard. Everywhere you look you’ll find some unique antiques or a piece of art, giving this romantic cottage for couples a really homely and lived in feel.

Navigation cottage is really welcoming; there’s a hamper waiting for you on arrival with everything to make the perfect English breakfast, there are maps, books, magazines and games as well as a special ‘What To Do’ insiders guide about what to see and do in the local area.

And there is so much to see and do around here. We really like the lively little town of Maldon with lots of historic buildings, individual shops and plenty of pubs and tearooms. One of our favourite things is to just leave the car at the cottage and walk or bike everywhere and this cottage is a perfect base for doing just that. If this is your thing too then you’ll be pleased to know that bikes are freely provided by the owners, just check that they are available to avoid any disappointment.

Doggie walks are plentiful too, just open your front door and walk on the sea wall, either into Maldon or up to 14 miles in the other direction towards Tollesbury.

With the hustle and bustle of locks, canals, boats and the local town on one side and the peace and quiet of the nature reserve on the other we think this is a pretty unique place. Highly recommended for a romantic break in Essex - very close to London yet a million miles away.
