Lobster Pot | A romantic beach hut for couples off the beaten track near Padstow, Cornwall

This cosy cabin for two is hidden off the beaten track, beside one of Cornwall’s most romantic bays. The Lobster Pot is tucked by the tiny coastal village of Porthcothan and offers guests a true retreat, and an ideal location for exploring the many hidden coves and sandy stretches of the southern shoreline.

This luxury hideaway has been created for couples and has a light and breezy feel about it – with a tasteful coastal theme and a mix of contemporary comforts and rustic decor.

Step inside and you’ll discover the Lobster Pot’s intimate living room with a log burner and comfy furniture for relaxing nights in, along with a 32-inch television, with Netflix and Freeview. This space is open plan, and we like all the detailing the owners have included – from the white wooden panelling to the driftwood and seaside prints. The kitchen includes everything you need for cooking, along with a Dolce Gusto pod coffee machine.

In the next room, you’ll find a sumptuous zip and link super king-sized bed, complete with luxury sheets. There is also a modern bathroom with a large deep bath with shower. All the rooms have electric radiators, and there’s also wifi throughout.

When you’re settled in and you’ve got your coffee in hand, we recommend stepping through the double patio doors into the garden area, which is one of the Lobster Pot’s standout features.

Out here, you’ll find your own stunning private and enclosed garden with flintstone chips and a coastal decor. Owners were inspired by the designs of film director Derek Jarman, who made a famous shingle design in Dungeness. This version includes a similar castaway look, with beach pots and subtle planting. The garden includes a large decking area, with table and chairs for two, making an ideal spot for alfresco dining under the fairy lights and stars on a clear night. We also recommend the gas barbecue with a plancha grill – perfect for a Cornish fish dinner.

Lobster Pot has private parking for two cars, and you can arrange access to the adjacent retreat – the Strand Line cabin - if both are booked through the same party. This retreat does not allow pets or smoking. It is unsuitable for children, although babies in arms are welcome.

The cabin sits only a four minute drive from Cornwall’s secret bay Porthcothan, a deep inlet surrounded by rocky headlands with a big expanse of sand at low tide. The adjoining village has remained largely undeveloped and provides an ‘away from it all’ feel.

Roundabout, there are at least ten beaches within a 20 minute drive. Next along, the busier Treyarnon Bay has beautiful golden sand and is short scenic walk from the equally stunning Constantine Bay.

Padstow is a short drive from Lobster Pot, with its picturesque harbour and Rick Stein’s famous Seafood Restaurant. We highly recommend a lunchtime stop at his own more casual cafe, where you can pick up all manner of seafood delicacies to share on the side of the beach. In the other direction, you can find Watergate Bay and Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall Restaurant, with Newquay a little further on offering great shopping.

There are great coastal walks to choose. We suggest a cycle down the Camel trail from Padstow. It’s an 18 mile stretch, mostly traffic free, down the route of a historic railway line, across the countryside and under the trees.
