Liberty at Pickwell Manor | A romantic Devon getaway near the beach

This romantic retreat is a picture postcard place to tuck yourselves away, and a great hideaway from which to explore cliff top walks and the sandy beaches of England’s coastline. Liberty is a calming first floor apartment in the grounds of the lovely Pickwell Manor, in the quaint Devon village of Georgeham.

This little gem is entered from Pickwell’s west-wing entrance hall. Step up to the first floor here and you’ll find a tailor made mix of original manor features – such as original panel doors, paired with modern upgrades. The owners have lovingly turned their attention to each corner of the apartment – meaning elements like a large cupboard have been transformed into a bright and modern wet room.

Liberty is a tranquil space that benefits from bright windows, which run along both sides of the apartment and bask its rooms in light. You will find a pintsized lounge, for relaxing in the evenings. We love the colours they’ve picked for these rooms – with mellow and mild Farrow and Ball tones throughout.

The bedrooms mean this retreat would work well for a couple who like their space, or for those who are bringing friends or family with them. There’s a tasteful master bedroom with a king size bed, and a twin room, with two single beds. Any extras can also make use of the comfy sofa bed in the lounge.

In these rooms you can sit back and enjoy views across the courtyard and into the walled garden at the back of the house. There’s also a bathroom with a bath, and a wet-room with a shower, each created for comfort.

There’s a dining room, with seating for six, making this a great retreat for quality time together in the evenings. And if you’re hoping to impress with your culinary skills, you’ll be helped along by the fully furnished kitchen, with everything you might need, including a dishwasher.

The retreat has free wifi available, with a fast connection, as well as a flat screen TV and DVD player. If a garden is more your thing, then step outside and enjoy the apartment’s shared garden and terrace, where you can barbecue in the summer. There’s even a tennis court on site.

The name Liberty suggests freedom, and we think this retreat will live up to its name. Pickwell Manor owners tell us you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to good beaches nearby. Putsborough Sands is only a five minute drive away, while Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton are popular choices – look out for surfers catching waves here.

If walking is your thing, then head to Exmoor to the east and National Trust coastlines and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which surround the area. If you’re looking for a day out exploring the local towns, try heading to Lynton and Lynmouth. Barnstaple is a larger town and offers good shopping with some unique independent shops. We like Ilfracombe for its art – and for the coast path that takes you above the town (although be warned, it’s breezy!) and Appledore offers a range of galleries if you’re hunting for some culture.
