Hidey Hole Cabin | A romantic woodland hideaway with panoramic views and log burner, set under the stars in East Sussex

This luxury retreat gives you the chance to wake up with a view of the countryside right at the end of your bed. Hidey Hole Cabin has been created as an ideal bolthole for romantics who want to experience chic and sleek design, mixed with beautiful East Sussex scenery along with the cosiness of a toasty log burner and a cinema-style projector.

Based in Downash Wood, the location is an hour from London, making this a great rural getaway option. At the same time, this peaceful hideaway is in a prime position to explore some of the great attractions of the South East, including the beautiful city of Canterbury, the arty coastal town of Hastings, and the bustling hub of Brighton. There are great walks all around, with the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty just outside your door, making this an excellent choice if you’re looking for hikes and fresh air.

Step up to this retreat and you’ll first notice the decked patio area, with its own canopy and complete with seating and a toasty log burner. This is a great place to sit of an evening, to toast your toes and get that campfire feeling. Duck your head out from here and you can enjoy the stars on a clear evening.

Once you’re inside, you’ll first spot the dining area, with a table set for two, surrounded by floor to ceiling windows. There are views across the woods and fields from almost every angle. Keep an eye out for the 150-year-old oak tree. The interior is full of natural wood too and gives the place a relaxed and uncluttered country feel.

The king size bed is also facing a huge window, so you can nature watch even with your head just above the covers. Hidey Hole owners Stephen and Jane say there are deer and barn owl in the area, as well as badgers, woodpeckers and more. In the evening, you can turn this space into your own cinema, with a projector screen at the press of a button, meaning you can curl up for a movie night or watch a Netflix show. You even have your own popcorn maker to complete the experience.

Inside the cabin, you’ll also find a modern kitchen space, with everything you might need for cooking while you’re away. There’s a separate bathroom with a shower and like the other treehouses and cabins the shower room has a proper flushing loo.

When you’re ready to stretch your legs you might like to start with a stroll from your doorstep around Bewl Water which borders onto Downash Wood – a pretty 750-acre reservoir. You could head down and admire the view, or if you’d really like to get walking you could aim to cover the full 12 mile route around the water.

Nearby, you’ll find Ticehurst Village, with its own artisan shops and award-winning pub the Bell Inn. And a little more exploring will lead you to many attractions in the area, including the historic 14th century Bodium Castle, the medieval citadel of Rye town, or steam trains at the Kent and Sussex Railway. We love a farm shop, and nearby Eggs to Apples comes highly recommended. For eating out try the local Michelin star Birchwood restaurant at Flimwell Park, which focuses on locally sources seasonal foods championing the artisan suppliers of Kent and Sussex.
