This retreat would make the perfect venue for a couple who want to explore some of England’s most picturesque counties – as you’ll find Hen House right on the edge of Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire. In a previous life, this romantic cottage used to be the home for dozens of happy chickens, and now it has been lovingly recreated as a cosy coop for couples. It’s right in the countryside, so come prepared for some great views and laid-back country sunsets.
The cottage is eight miles from the medieval town of Ludlow, making it a good choice if you like a little history to investigate. You can get here from London in three hours, and from Manchester in two and a half, so it’s a handy hop.
The first thing you are likely to notice, as you walk up to Hen House, are the beautiful gardens around it. Brook Farm, where the Hen House is set, is full of big, open spaces. You’ll spot the apple trees, a little brook that meanders around the edge of the land, and you can’t miss all the geraniums planted by the cottage owners too. Hen House has its own private, enclosed garden, which is a great place to catch some evening sun. There’s a barbecue and outdoor log-burner to keep you cosy when the sun goes down.
Once you step through the front door at Hen House you’ll find yourself in an open plan space, with a relaxed feel. There’s a fully equipped kitchen and dining area, complete with dishwasher, fridge freezer and electric cooker, as well as a farmhouse dining table for leisurely meals for two.
Step across from here and you’ll find a living area with a comfy sofa, armchair and throws. There’s a Smart TV and DVD player, along with high-speed internet.
The bedroom is a great space to relax – and it has that country feel with its king size bed under exposed beams in the ceiling. Alongside this, you’ll find the bathroom and dressing room with a beautiful bath and shower. The Hen House owners will provide you with linen and towels.
And if you fancy a night out at the movies, there’s a gorgeous little cinema (in the studio above) – with streaming services and DVD player - exclusively for Hen House guests. A real treat!
Once you’re settled, you’re in an excellent place to explore. There are short walks right from your doorstep – and if you like a hike there are plenty of options. The cottage owners recommend you check out Church Stretton, with its wooded valleys and moorland hills – it’s a great place to cycle too. There’s also Mortimer Forest, Long Mynd and the beautiful Malvern Hills.
Ludlow is known for its great restaurants, delis and cafes – and every day, there’s a market of one sort or another, so this is an ideal location if you are a couple of foodies. In September, the town celebrates the best of local produce at the Ludlow Food Festival. Nearby Tenbury Wells is known as the “town in the orchard” and an ideal point for picking up the local cider route.
