This romantic retreat is tucked into the grounds of a rather grand country manor – so you can get away to your own corner of luxury in North Devon. Find yourself among six acres of historic luxury – with Italian gardens, rose arches and country views all around. And you’re just a 20-minute stroll from the sandy beach of Putsborough. Sounds good to us.
You’ll find Divine in Pickwell Manor – a historic house dating all the way back to the 10th century. This is a spot seeped in history – from its first Saxon resident Edmar, to a group of Norman Knights. The current house was rebuilt in 1906 in a Jacobean style, and is grade II listed to preserve its stunning architectural and historical features.
Head to Divine via the west-wing entrance hall, up the stairs and on to the second floor. This is a warm, cosy and very light apartment, with windows on both sides letting light stream in throughout the day.
There’s a comfy living room, with two sofas, a flat screen TV and DVD player, as well as complimentary wifi. We like the light colours in here.
Further in, you’ll find the apartment’s bedroom, complete with king sized bed and beautiful mullion windows which look over Pickwell Manor grounds and out across the Devon countryside, along with a great high ceiling for that feeling of big space. The bed can also be unzipped and transformed into twin beds. Additionally, there’s a double sofa bed in the lounge, meaning the apartment can sleep up to four people.
Through from here, you’ll find a light, modern bathroom, complete with a shower and bath. Linen and towels are provided.
Divine’s kitchen houses everything you might need for a self catering stay, and includes those lovely country views. The room has a colourful feel with an original canvas painting on the wall, and the table here seats four, making it a great space to wind down together after a day exploring.
Outside, guests can enjoy a shared terrace, along with gardens for strolling. The sun terrace leads down to an Italian Garden, surrounded by mature shrubs, flowers, and rose arches. Pickwell Manor grounds offer glorious views over the surrounding Devon countryside and along to the nearby coast, less than half a mile away.
There’s a barbecue for your use in the summertime. There’s even a tennis court on site, as well as a games room.
There’s plenty to do while you’re here. We would make a beeline for the beaches for starters – and there’s several to choose from. Sands at Putsborough, Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton are all very popular with surfers. You can explore the rock pools at low tide, and there are good spots for beach games on a hot day. Avid walkers can pick from an array of country and cliff top walks, with Exmoor to the east and National Trust coastlines and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty all around. There are opportunities for golf, kite surfing and cycling (try the Tarke Trail) as well as horse riding nearby and paddle boarding.
If you fancy a day trip there are also lots of interesting places choose from. Manor owners recommend Lundy Island, Lynton and Lynmouth, for starters. And Clovelly, Instow and Appledore (which are pretty Devon seaside villages) and Barnstaple for good shopping. Take your pick!
