Sit back in your own private hot tub and watch the world go by. Old Rose Shepherd’s Hut Retreat offers guests a slice of luxury, tranquility and a whole bunch of countryside charm - with woodpeckers, owls and deer, big sunsets and starry skies. This retreat can be found on the outskirts of Churchinford, a pretty village in the beautiful Blackdown Hills on the border of Somerset and Devon. It’s a part of the country known for its unspoiled landscapes and deep valley views, making it an ideal place to relax and recharge.
Owners Ben and Sam believe in creating a harmonious balance between luxury and nature and they have done just that with this beautiful romantic retreat. They say: “Our retreat is built on the principles of sustainability and comfort, ensuring that you can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors without compromising on the finer things in life.” This shows in their Romantic Getaway package which includes a bottle of wine or champagne and chocolates on arrival as well as a holistic treatment of your choice. They also offer wellness retreats during the year, so you can both enjoy things like a yoga classes or mindfulness and meditation sessions. And thanks to its unspoiled location it is also perfect for guided mindful nature walks, wildlife watching or stargazing.
Your handcrafted oak shepherd’s hut is situated on the edge of a wild meadow, with a vista of rolling hills. We love how tranquil this spot is. Park up, and head inside and you’ll find a calming space, with wood panelling and plenty of light, thanks to the big double doors which can be flung open in summer time for the full countryside experience.
There’s a king size bed, complete with luxury linens, as well as a toasty wood burning stove for cosy nights in.
A well organised kitchenette includes a breakfast hob and microwave, as well as a fridge, kettle and toaster. You will also find a delicious personalised welcome pack here, with some extra little luxuries to start your break, as well as tea, coffee and milk. And there’s a bistro table and chairs for you to enjoy a moment looking out onto the countryside. A complete en-suite bathroom, including eco toiletries, bath robes, fluffy towels and slippers tops it all off.
Outside, there is comfy wooden furniture along with a charcoal barbecue - perfect for sunny afternoon lunches. Probably our favourite feature is this retreat’s private bubbling hot tub, perfect for two. This has been set up so you can enjoy tranquil hours relaxing, watching the occasional deer in the meadows, and taking in the peaceful atmosphere of the Blackdown Hills.
From your location, on the outskirts of the village of Churchinford, you will find you are just a stone’s throw from The York Inn, a traditional country pub with home cooked food, as well as a well stocked village shop.
Old Rose Shepherd’s Hut is a pet friendly retreat - so one well behaved dog or two small dogs on leads are allowed. We are sure they would enjoy the many walks in the area, including a woodland bluebell walk starting from your doorstep.
There is all of The Blackdown Hills National Landscape to explore. This includes breathtaking views across the Devon and Somerset countryside from the Culmstock Beacon; Hemyock Caste with its rare, moated, late 14th century castle; and lesser spotted flora and fauna like sneezewort and greater tussock-sedge in the ancient woodland to be found at the Jan Hobbs nature reserve.
It’s an easy hop to the sea from here too. Just a 30-minute drive away, you will find yourself at the Jurassic coastline at Lyme Regis, with its fresh sea air and long sandy beaches.
