This romantic retreat is one for the countryside fans. The Coach House is large and spacious and offers a couple the chance to get away from city life and chill out in a holiday cottage with a real luxury feel – and its own extra large outdoor hot tub.
Situated on Sherway Farm, a former dairy farm, this southern escape in East Devon has panoramic views across the landscape, stretching all the way to Brixham’s Berry Head which is 28 miles away. It is set on 11 acres of land included the very pretty Paradise copse woodland, and it’s a stone’s throw from an award-winning gastro pub.
This rather grand former coach house has been renovated to a high standard, and care has been taken to keep a rural theme present throughout the interior – with natural wood and calming colours. Step inside and you’ll find an open plan living space with wooden flooring, comfortable sofas and a wide screen TV, along with wifi. From here, you can step into the dining area, set by big terrace doors, for a romantic evening meal admiring the countryside. The kitchen runs alongside this and includes everything you could want for an evening meal.
Once you open those terrace doors, you’re in the heart of the countryside, with an outdoor patio table and chairs for a glass of wine in the sun, and an enormous private hot tub for a good soak after a long walk or exploring the nearby towns and coastline.
Upstairs there’s an en suite bathroom with rolltop bath and a super king size bed, with further views from the windows.
This is baby friendly accommodation, so if you’re getting away for an anniversary celebration with a tiny tot in tow then the cottage – with its cot, toys, monitors, electric sterilisers, night lights and high chairs – is pretty much ideal.
Expect to be set up when you arrive. There’s plenty of parking available and inside the cottage you’ll find milk in the fridge, coffee and tea on the side, bath towels, hot tub towels and Bluetooth speaker. There might even be a few extra culinary treats on the agenda too. The supermarket is a short drive into Cullompton, and home deliveries can easily be arranged.
Once you’ve settled in there’s a lot to enjoy in the surrounding area. Owners recommend the town of Sidmouth, a short drive away, which is surrounded by East Devon’s area of outstanding natural beauty. It’s a great point to connect to the famous Jurassic Coast and National Trust properties too. Alternatively, you can explore Dartmoor National Park, with its vast granite capped moorlands and native wild ponies.
For anyone looking for more urban amusements, the nearby city of Exeter mixes Roman history and architecture with the buzzing atmosphere for a thriving modern city. It’s a good spot for dining and retail therapy. And when it comes to dining, there are some great choices in and around East Devon. The award-winning Five Bells Inn is under a mile away from your cottage. It dates back to the 16th century, with stone floors and exposed wooden beams, and has a large beer garden for the summer and a menu the cottage owners have recommended. And if you’re looking for somewhere to treat yourselves, you could try The Holt, in nearby Honiton, which has earned itself a spot in the Michelin Guide.
