Heath Hollow | A romantic hot tub retreat set in ancient woodland near Colchester

The Roman’s favoured Colchester as the site for their first British city - a capital, no less - and while the number one spot may have shifted locations to London, Colchester’s charm is still winning hearts. Famed for for its cultural heritage, beautiful scenery and range of theatres and galleries, this historic city is a great choice for a romantic break away.

Tucked away in beautiful ancient woodlands just outside of Colchester is Heath Hollow. Less than 90 minutes from central London this romantic getaway offers guests the chance to indulge in its huge four poster bed, copper roll top bath and private hot tub, all accompanied by birdsong.

Head down the private drive and into this romantic retreat and you’ll find yourself surrounded by bespoke wooden beams and rich, jewel-coloured furnishings, all set against a woodland backdrop. From this corner of the world, you can wake up to the peaceful sounds of woodland birds - and if you listen out closely enough you just might make out the occasional roar of a lion from the nearby Colchester Zoo.

This is an open plan getaway, which makes it feel like you’re in a luxury hotel suite. At the end of your bed you’ll find a striking copper top bath. Behind you, your bathroom is tucked in an en suite and comes complete with a rainfall shower.

Step down from the sleeping area, which can be separated by dark magenta curtains, and you’ll find a living area, including a sofa and velvet Chesterfield armchair. This space includes a 52” Smart television, complimentary wifi, and even a gramophone. We love the cosy feel here, with its fire-effect heater and candles.

When it comes to eating in, the lodge owners have created a beautiful dining spot, with a table and chairs set for two next to the lodge’s huge floor-to-ceiling corner windows. From here, you can look into your own secluded garden space. For cooking, there’s a fully equipped small kitchen complete with an oven, hobs, a toaster and coffee machine, a fridge, and even a small wine fridge.

Step out onto your private terrace and you’ll find your own bubbling hot tub, perfect for a relaxing afternoon dip, or an evening soak. We love the natural feel of this spot, with plants and greenery all around you. Out here you will also find two swinging egg chairs and a fire pit - which creates a great opportunity for fireside chats and enjoying the outdoors after a day exploring the city.n This retreat has its own private off-road parking and a gated entrance, so it’s secure.

When you are ready to explore, you have all the sights of Essex at your feet. Some of the options we would be keen to explore include Colchester Castle - which was built back when this was the Roman capital - and the sun bears and red pandas at Colchester Zoo. For art lovers, there’s the beautiful Munning’s Art Museum, while theatre fans can sample the Headgate Theatre.
