Cosy up at this beautiful cottage retreat - a former resting place for Scotland’s country shepherds - situated in the peaceful hills of Glen Esk. Colmeallie Bothy is around an hour’s drive from Aberdeen, and is an ideal spot for a rural break away, in unspoilt countryside shared with red deer, oystercatchers and grouse.
This pet friendly retreat is located on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park. Here, you are right by the North Esk River, perfect for paddling and pottering around on sunny afternoons too.
This 19th century romantic retreat has kept all its charm from its former life as a shepherd’s bothy. Step inside and you’ll find a living room with original wooden beams and a cosy fireplace, complete with a woodburner for toasty nights in. The exposed brickwork and deep set windows add to this retreat’s rustic past.
There are two comfy sofas, and original artwork on the walls - making this a real home from home, and the living room also includes a dining table set for two. From here, walk through into your kitchen, which includes all the essentials you’ll need for cooking. There’s an oven, hobs, a microwave and a fridge.
We love the stunning beautiful views from every window, including the bedroom. Here you’ll find a double bed and cheerful decor, making the space feel restful and easy going. With Colmeallie Bothy’s location set deep in the countryside, you can be sure of a restful night’s sleep. From the bedroom, step into your en suite bathroom, complete with a modern walk-in shower, rainfall shower, and heated towel rail.
Outside, there’s parking for a car. This retreat is also pet-friendly, meaning you can bring your well-behaved pooch along with you too.
Once you are ready to explore, you’ll find many local places of interest. There are opportunities to try salmon and trout fishing, along with whisky tasting and wild swimming - and the bothy team can help organise trips through their special concierge service.
From Colmeallie Bothy, you are only 40 minutes to Scotland’s east coast, and at Dundee there are opportunities for sea tours including those organised by Boat Seafari Adventure - an excellent idea if you would like to see bottlenose dolphins and grey seals.
You’ll find many unique food havens in the town of Edzell, located seven miles away. We like the look of Balmakewan Farm Shop - which has been highly rated for breakfasts and lunches, and there’s fish and chips at The Tuck Inn too. There’s also well-loved gastro pub food at Scots Corner, in nearby Luthermuir, so after a good day’s walking you’ll have plenty of opportunities for cosy meals together.
