Bulworthy Cabin | A super romantic off-grid getaway in the secluded Devon woods

Always dreamed of having your own off-grid cabin in the woods? Now you can experience it yourself in the romantic Bulworthy Cabin in gorgeous Devon. Heat and warm water comes from the wood burning stove, electricity from solar panels and you can cook over the campfire or on the barbecue. Set in a secluded woodland glade, this is the ultimate ‘getting away from it all’ woodland escape.

When Anna and Pete were travelling around Europe in an old VW campervan they started dreaming of owning their own piece of land. And what’s more romantic than owning a woodland? After years of heard work their dreams have turned into reality and they now love to share it with visitors who want to experience living off-grid in the woods for themselves.

The setting for this little cabin is so romantic. These woods have been described by the Wildlife Trust as a ‘mosaic of habitats’, including rich grassland, a pond and stream and many varied areas of woodland. Wildlife is abundant, including tawny owls, buzzards, deer and if you’re quiet you might even see badgers, stoats and foxes. Included in your stay is a free guided walk through the woodland. Depending on the season Anna or Pete might show you wild flowers, edible mushrooms or give you more background info about the intricate eco-systems you might find.

From the outside the cabin is rustic and blends in perfectly in its surroundings. Inside it is super cosy and carefully put together. We love how materials from the local woods have been used such as the chunky handmade bed and the cherry window sills. Most other materials have been reclaimed or upcycled like the beautiful parquet flooring and the furniture.

The wood burner is the heart of this home. Not only does it heat the cabin, it also heats the water and above all else warms the soul when you enjoy it from the comfort of the cosy bed. And of course fire logs from the local woodland are supplied.

Everything has been thought of to make your stay comfortable and memorable. The kitchenette features a two ring hob and coolbox (large enough for bottles of champagne!), there is a wardrobe and a selection of games, books and maps. There’s also a really generous en-suite with shower, wash basin and toilet. Two USB charging sockets and wifi are available, but to be honest, why would you want these in such glorious settings…

In the daytime and on long evenings you’ll love the porch where you can just sit back, relax and take it the birdsong and woodland sounds from the lazy hammock. The woods are there for you to explore and there are many footpaths leading your around. And at night you can still enjoy the wonders of nature when you look up to the starlit skies. This area is a dark sky reserve so it happens to be one of the best places in the country to star gaze.

The village of Rackenford is only half an hour’s walk away and with its local village store this is a handy base to restock. A little further afield is Tiverton where you will find a good selection of restaurants, varying from modern Asian cuisine to traditional pubs or classic French cuisine perfect for a candlelit romantic meal out.

You’re also not far from Exmoor National Park with miles of footpaths and stunning vistas. There are some lovely seaside towns and villages to explore such as sleepy Lynton or Ilfracombe with its bustling harbour, good selection of independent local shops and many interesting bays to explore. If it’s beach you’re after then we recommend Woolacombe - voted number one beach in the UK on Tripadvisor twice in recent years you can’t go wrong here.

But the real treat is coming back to your cabin in the woods. Light the campfire, put the kettle on, sit back, take in the sights & sounds and just relax. What more could you need?
