Belchamp Hall Mill, Belchamp Walter near Sudbury
Belchamp Walter
Suffolk and Essex border
England
Wind your way through historic grounds to your own romantic home-from-home, the luxurious Belchamp Hall Mill – which is pet friendly too. This romantic cottage is tucked by its own private reed pond and ancient woodland, in relaxed rolling countryside. Its location between the quaint town of Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds, ‘Jewel in the Crown of Suffolk’, makes it an ideal choice for individuals who want to sample the southern English countryside, or for Londoners who need a fresh air break less than two hours’ drive from the city.
The surrounding countryside was a retreat for London landscape artists Constable and Gainsborough – and it can be that for you too. The area boasts a whole variety of sights to explore – with landmarks like Historic Lavenham, Colchester Castle, the wild Rendlesham Forest, and the Snape Marshes to name but a few.
Belchamp Hall Mill is a great place to start. You can find it down a country track in the impressive grounds of Belchamp Hall, which has been home to the Raymond family since 1611. Set by its own reed pond, this lovingly converted mill barn has been designed with couples in mind, mixing antique woodwork and rustic features with modern luxuries like its toasty log burner.
Step in through the mill’s stable door and you’ll find a comfy bedroom, complete with underfloor heating and a huge super king size bed. We love the exposed brickwork and old beams. There are country views from each window too, and a pond just outside, making it a real escape.
Across from here, the retreat owners have created a poets’ corner, with a writing desk, chair and comfy leather sofa, perfect for a lazy afternoon relaxing.
Through a wide stone archway, you’ll find the mill’s modern shower room behind a glass screen, with toilet, basin, power shower and the mill’s own uplifting colour scheme.
Head up the solid oak staircase and you’ll find more country views from every window upstairs too. Here is where you’ll discover the mill’s kitchen, with its own professional Rangemaster cooker, along with fridge-freezer, microwave, and all the basics you might need to whip up a lovely meal for two.
Upstairs also includes a beautiful open plan sitting room, where you can chill out after a full day exploring the area. The mill includes a Juliet balcony – perfect for looking out on the country with a coffee or a glass of wine in hand. In the evening this is an especially cosy place to be – you can sit back on its Ralph Loren sofa and warm your toes by the mill’s own log burner.
Belchamp Hall Mill includes wifi throughout, as well as having its own Smart TV. The owners have made their retreat pet friendly, and so if you’re bringing your favourite pooch along you can also find a dog bed – and plenty of walks for them too.
There is lots to do around the local area. The mill owners recommend you sample some of the great local strolls around and along the Stour Valley. We fancy seeing Beth Chatto Gardens or the impressive Melford Hall and Kentwell Hall . Local country pubs abound, with The Peasant, Half Moon and Henny Swan along with plethora of great pubs, restaurants and fine antique shops in Long Melford.
