With views across the River Tees and countryside, this five star gold rated romantic retreat has a lovely light and airy feeling. Cheeseborough House is a grade two-listed weaver’s cottage located in Thorngate, in historic Barnard Castle. While its history stems from centuries past, the cottage has been transformed inside, to give you a spot of luxury while you’re away.
We think the area of Barnard Castle is an ideal place to head to if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway that puts you on track to a myriad of walks and historical sights, as well as some breathtaking scenery. From here, you’re on the cusp of the beautiful Pennines, as well as being close to the rolling Yorkshire Dales and the epic Lake District fells. This is also an ideal starting point for adventures in Durham, Richmond and the nearby valley of Teesdale.
Step through the front door of this retreat and you’ll find a relaxing lounge with an easy gas- powered log burning stove, along with two tasteful leather sofas for cosy nights in. From here, you can step through to the large kitchen and dining area. We particularly like this space. Not only does it have a working fireplace, and a beautiful dining table for meals in – but also a stable door from here means you can let the fresh air through each morning, and wander out to enjoy your coffee outside. Through this door you’ll find your own secluded sunny courtyard garden with apple tree and flower border. There’s even a mosaic table and chairs, decking area with rattan sofa for dining al fresco.
A welcome homemade treat, bottle of fizz will give you that instant holiday feeling to celebrate your arrival.
Meanwhile, a short hop upstairs will take you through to two beautiful ensuite bedrooms, complete with Egyptian linen both tastefully decorated.
This retreat comes with free off street parking, and complimentary wifi. When you’re ready to explore, the surrounding area has some fabulous places of interest to visit. Including the world famous Bowes Museum, this houses an impressive art collection and regular touring exhibitions. You will also find the grand ruins of the 12th century Barnard Castle
The Teesdale way is just meters from the door for walks and great cycling routes to explore. If you want hiking on a grander scale we would highly recommend a day spent walking in the Lake District – it is well worth the drive and promises to blow the cobwebs away.
Dining in Barnard Castle couldn’t be better with a host of excellent pubs and restaurants all in walking distance from the house. Plus a weekly food market and great butchers, bakers, antique shops and independent stores.
